The Saba Conservation Foundation is inviting qualified applicants to apply for the post of Saba Bank Park Officer:
The Saba Conservation Foundation (SCF), in cooperation with the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation, is in charge of the management of the Saba Bank and thus formed the Saba Bank Management Unit (SBMU). To expand this unit, the SCF is presently looking to hire an additional Saba Bank Park Officer, who will be involved in the management of the Saba Bank.
The work will consist of monitoring fisheries activities on the Saba Bank, surveying marine life, fish and lobster catches, liaise with fishermen, scientists and the Saba community, and report to the management of the SCF on a regular basis.
The primary focus of this position is to operate and maintain SBMU vessels and associated equipment as well as to assist in marine and coastal protected area management. The responsibilities, qualifications and terms and conditions will be as follows:
Key Areas of Responsibility
- Besides commanding vessels up to 42 feet in the Northern Dutch Caribbean in often rough seas, to achieve the outcomes required by this position, you must be able to:
- Work in consultation with the Saba Bank Science Officer and under the supervision of the SCF Parks Manager.
- Contribute as a member of a team to the preparation of work programs for equipment and infrastructure maintenance and development.
- Conduct marine patrols on the Saba Bank in consultation with Saba Bank Science officer and Technical Officer.
- Work closely with the fishermen, as catch data collector, on-board observer, information provider and general interactions.
- Participate in UW surveys and other UW work on the Saba Bank.
- Assist visiting scientists with research on the Saba Bank.
- Maintain the Saba Bank Patrol vessels and associated equipment, including GPS, radar, autopilot plotter and hydraulic winch, among others.
- Compile and maintain reports and records, participate in budget management processes and the procurement of materials and services.
- Perform customer contact duties, including answering enquiries, providing education and advice.
- Perform compliance and enforcement tasks on suspected breaches of relevant regulations and permit conditions. Assist senior staff and staff from other agencies with investigations as required.
- Maintain productive relationships with other stakeholders (aside from fishermen), e.g. scuba diver, boaters, coastguard and other government departments.
- Plan and co-ordinate emergency response procedures including natural disaster contingency plans, search and rescue procedures, and medical emergency procedures.
