The Caribbean Journal reports on the new fleet of ATV vehicles received by Haiti’s Environmental Monitoring Corps last week.
Environment Minister Joseph Ronald Toussaint said his office was “committed” to improving Haiti’s environmental system.
The environment is one of five major stated priorities for Haiti President Michel Martelly, along with employment, education, the Rule of Law and energy.
“In the environmental point of view, our country is sick, very sick, and we are obligated to restore its health,” Martelly said.
Environmental monitoring can be costly, both in terms of time and money, but without monitoring, there are no checks in place to ensure that people follow the rules to preserve the very environment on which they depend.
