The Cayman Islands Government Department of Environment is currently in its second year of a Darwin Initiative project to comprehensively review the Cayman Islands marine parks to ensure that, 25 years on, they are still optimally configured to protect Cayman’s marine habitats and resources for future generations. Assessments have been undertaken to identify and quantify, where possible, the current level of threat to the marine environment as well as the capacity of Cayman Islands coral reefs and other marine systems to cope with future threats such as climate change related coral bleaching. Staff on this Darwin Initiative project have engaged members of the community in a first round of public consultation to present findings and hear what people would like to see in an improved marine parks system for the Cayman Islands, based on the scientific research and their own usage of the marine environment.
As part of the celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of marine parks in the Cayman Islands, the Cayman Department of Environment is holding a marine parks review and inviting comment and feedback from the public:
As part of the 25th Anniversary of Marine Parks in the Cayman Islands the Department of Environment is conducting a review of the Marine Parks. The most important part of which is hearing back from the public. We want to know what you think of the marine parks, what can be improved and how you want to be able to use your marine resources for the next twenty five years. We will then combine that information with scientific data that the Department has gathered and come back with plans for the public to choose from, probably in about April 2012.
Send your comments, suggestions and opinions to DoE@gov.ky and help us make the marine parks work right for Cayman for the next 25 years.
See the Department of Environment website for more information.
