This week the Dominican Republic will be host to participants in a Island Species-Led Action training programme, organised by the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust.
Island Species-Led Action is a 10 day course for conservation practioners and educators working in some of the world’s ‘hottest’ conservation hotspots to save species from extinction. The course will focus on proven and practical approaches to managing endangered species and habitats on islands.
…
ISLA is tailored to meet the needs of the island and region in which it is being held at the time. …The main topics included are:
• Understanding islands

• Threat identification and conservation planning
• Captive breeding, reintroduction and translocation
• Invasive species management
• Habitat restoration
• Analogue species
• Population monitoring
• Stakeholder identification and workshop planning
• Conservation education
• Fundraising and proposal writing
• Habitat restorationAt the end of the course participants will have a greater understanding of the issues involved in the application of species-led conservation techniques for endangered species recovery on islands so that they can make appropriate effective management decisions.
The course in the Dominican Republic is being organised with the co-operation of the Punta Cana Ecological Foundation and the Last Survivors Project.
The Durrell Trust offers a variety of conservation training courses. See their website for information on what’s upcoming. I expect that their 2012 training prospectus should be available soon; I’ll post it here when it’s released.
