The British Virgin Islands branch of the Caribbean Youth Environment Network has been working to encourage environmentally-responsible behaviour.
They held an awareness-raising exhibition for World Water Day:
Steps as simple as turning off the tap while you brush your teeth or taking shorter showers will go a long way in saving money and water, according to Lenette Lewis, national coordinator of the Caribbean Youth Environment Network.
Virgin Islands members of the regional non-profit organisation hosted an exhibition at the Central Administration Building as part of activities for World Water Day on Tuesday.
This year’s observation was themed, “Water For Cities: Responding to the Urban Challenge.”
Posters on display at the exhibition trumpeted slogans including, “Save a drop” and “Don’t flush away your savings.”
The display is aimed at “bringing home” the message about the need to conserve water, according to Ms. Lewis.
“There are a lot of easy things you can do to minimise the amount of water that is wasted,” the youth leader said.
And they are participating in Earth Hour this weekend:
The Caribbean Youth Environment Network- BVI Chapter will join with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the rest of the world in celebrating Earth Hour this Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 8:30pm by turning off of non-essential lighting and plugging out electrical appliances for one hour.
“We appeal to individuals, businesses and the entire community to join us in this voluntary act in conserving our present and future. Let us go beyond the hour and become environmental stewards to aid in the preservation of our planet,” the press release stated.
