The CARICOM Secretariat has announced that later this month it will host a workshop on integrated environmental assessment:
The Caribbean Community Secretariat is moving to train some of the Region’s senior policy makers and analysts in the use of Integrated Environmental Assessments as a tool for mainstreaming Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) into national development policies.
Paramaribo, Suriname will be the venue of the Secretariat’s first regional workshop titled Capacity Building for the use of Integrated Environmental Assessments (IEAs) and for Mainstreaming Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) into Policy Development and Implementation.
The three-day workshop which commences on Wednedsay, March 29 is part of the European Union funded project on Capacity Building Related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Countries, which is being implemented by the CARICOM Secretariat in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The training programme targets senior policy makers and their analysts from CARIFORUM [CARICOM + the Dominican Republic] Countries, and is aimed at strengthening their capacity to understand and extract key messages from IEAs to achieve priority environmental outcomes.
Participants will also be provided with guidelines for mainstreaming MEAs commitments and obligations into national policies, plans and programmes using IEAs as the main instrument. This could ensure the sustained and effective implementation of MEAs while reducing the burden of implementation on countries.
