comment invited on cayman islands draft conservation law

June 24th, 2010

Cayman Islanders have until July 16 to comment on the draft National Conservation Law:

The public has only until 16 July to make comments on the proposed National Conservation Law, following the directive of Cayman Minister of Environment, the Hon Mark Scotland, who said he wants to have a law before the Legislative Assembly by year’s end.

Key “stakeholder” meetings are taking place, according to a Government press release, and district meetings will be held for public discourse after 5 July. The dates, times and locations of those meetings will be announced by the Department at a later date.

In the meantime, the Department has posted the National Conservation Law on its website, along with a “Guide” for the public.

“Protecting the environment is not synonymous with preventing development,” [Minister Scotland] said. “It in contrast ensures that growth is in fact sustainable. For rest assured, unless we safeguard the integrity of our natural resources, we will certainly be sounding the death knell for these islands.”
