Since 2007, Coral Cay Conservation has been working to monitor and protect Tobago’s coastal resources:
…the Tobago Coastal Ecosystem Mapping Project (TCEMP) has already proven hugely successful. Working closely with Tobago House of Assembly (THA) and the Buccoo Reef Trust (BRT) CCC has and continues to collect vital baseline information on the current status of the island’s extensive reef systems. We are monitoring the prevalence of stressors to the reef systems such as coral bleaching and diseases in order to pinpoint areas of maximum biodiversity and resilience against global warming. The surveying is done by volunteers and the information gathered will be used to develop an effective and sustainable management plans for the island’s coastal resources.
The baseline surveys currently focus on the reefs between Buccoo and Castara on the Caribbean side of the island. Due to the project’s success, the programme has been extended and scientific inforrnation will be collected from all around the island.
Coral Cay Conservation is:
an award winning specialist in coral reef and tropical forest conservation. You can join our projects as a volunteer, researcher or specialist and work hands -on, out in the field. With our new conservation breaks, mini expeditions and special discounts – we offer a responsible alternative to active breaks away, plus the chance to travel with a purpose and really making a difference in the places that need it most.
The organisation offers volunteers the chance to participate in their activities in Tobago (and the other places where they work) by joining a conservation expedition. For one Londoner’s account of his experiences on a Coral Cay conservation trip to Tobago, click here.
