new lionfish capture device launched in the bahamas

Safespear lionfish capture systemBahamian fisheries expert Mr. Gregg Waugh has developed and patented an apparatus to safely harvest the invasive Indo-Pacific lionfish.

Mr Waugh, who has worked in fishery management for over 30 years, held a brief presentation and demonstration of the SafeSpear kit….

The kit includes a two-foot lionfish polespear (patent pending) made of aluminum, deep water lionfish bag, shallow water lionfish bucket float, lionfish gloves, grippers, clippers, knife, first aid info heat pack, as well as recipes on how to prepare the fish.

“The lionfish is reproducing at a high rate in the waters of the Bahamas. We at SafeSpear are very concerned about protecting our environment,” he said.

Some local experts say the lionfish population is out of control. They believe that there is no effective strategy to completely eradicate the species.
