Leatherback turtle, St. KittsPassengers from the Royal Clipper cruise ship recently helped to clean up a turtle-nesting beach in St. Kitts.

The effort was initiated by Star Clippers and is a collaboration with the St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network and Kantours, St. Kitts. The passengers managed to collect and remove 652 pounds of garbage from the fragile turtle habitat. The trash was separated into garbage and recyclable items and hauled away.

The St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network was formed in 2003, and is a non-profit turtle monitoring and conservation organisation.

Sea-turtle nesting season in the Caribbean begins in late March to early April. MEP Caribbean Publishers passes on some tips for visiting turtle nesting sites, and the Caribbean Conservation Corporation provides some general information about turtle nesting and behaviour.
